As stewards of sustainable operations, we seek new partnerships to promote long-term sustainability. We are a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, an active member of the Business for Social Responsibility group and partner to the EPA's SmartWay Program. Through these key partnerships we can effectively promote environmental responsibility within our own operations as well within those along our supply chain.
Sustainable Apparel Coalition
Kohl's is a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). The SAC is a group of apparel and footwear manufacturers, retailers, brands and non-governmental organizations working together to standardize sustainability measurements in the supply chain. In 2012, the coalition released the Higg Index, an indicator-based tool for apparel that enables companies to evaluate material types, products, facilities and processes based on a range of environmental and product design choices. We use the tool to measure the sustainability of factories that produce our private brands. We also have been active in the refinement of the facilities portion of the tool.
EPA Smartway Partnership
Launched in 2004, SmartWay is an EPA program that reduces transportation-related emissions by creating incentives to improve supply chain fuel efficiency. Kohl's joined SmartWay in 2006. As part of this program, freight carriers and shippers commit to benchmarking operations, tracking fuel consumption and improving annual performance. We report all of our domestic transportation shipping miles and trips to the EPA annually using its carrier FLEET tool. In addition, we encourage every domestic carrier to participate in this program.
